Why Most People Don’t Achieve Their Goals? Will You Be One Of Them?

It’s the beginning of the year and it is usually the time when people set their goals for the new year.


Their “new resolutions” they call them.


I can see that when I go to the gym.


Usually, during January and early February, new faces appear, but the truth is I will in most cases see only those new faces for few weeks.


Let’s say a maximum of 2-3 weeks.


After that, it all goes back to normal with the regular attendants…


  • So why is this happening?
  • Why people can’t stick to their goals?


Whether it is in life, in sport, exercising, at work, in business, losing weight in dieting, or anything else… people tend to fall back short on their goals. And this happens every year. Even if they have the best intention, most people rarely achieve their goals.


Well, here are the 5 reasons:

  • They set goals to impress others…
  • Their goals were forced upon them, so technically speaking they are not their goals!
  • They are trying to do too much too soon, and thus they are overwhelmed…
  • They have a fear of failure or low self-esteem and therefore they “self-sabotage”
  • They don’t know how to properly set goals!


So if you ticked any one of those, you’re bound to be disappointed in the near future!


So what can you do instead?


Here are my 7 tips to achieve your goals:


1. What is it that you really love to achieve this year? Think about it. Think about yourself. What is really important and meaningful to YOU! Not anyone else. It’s your goals, and not your friend's goal or your parents’ goals… You can only take control of your life, not of that anyone else, so think for YOU.


We have things in life that are very important and meaningful to us, and us only. These are called our (personal) values, the things that we value most. If our goals are aligned with our values, the chance of achieving them is much much higher!


2. Involve a significant other. Why? Because this keeps you accountable and also helps you with support when needed. The team works better than solo….


3. Write down your goals, so you can review them from time to time and they don’t occupy space in your mind and even get forgotten. A short pencil is better than a long memory!


4. Small bites… Keep goals down to small chunks that are manageable. Otherwise, you’ll get overwhelmed and that won’t help! And you’ll beat yourself up.


5. Have a plan. It’s nice to have a goal and say the universe is going to bring to me. The truth is that doesn’t work unless you act on them. Nobody is going to act for you. So set your action plan and start tackling it day after day, bit by bit… Those who haven’t got plans, plan to fail….


6. Use visualisation to activate your Reticular Activating System (RAS). A little device built-in your nervous system that tracks us towards our targets and filters the type of information that comes in. There are plenty of techniques to do just that.


7. Be realistic and reward yourself. Focus on your goal, tackle your actions, and make sure it makes sense to you. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is!

Here are some signposts to define your goals.


They need to be SMART… Duh!… that makes sense right!


What is a S.M.A.R.T goal?

  • Specific & Simple. Define precisely what you want. The outcome or the objective.
  • Measurable & Meaningful to YOU! How will you know when you’ve attained it? What will you see, hear, feel, smell, taste? Get that image clearly in mind
  • Achievable & As if Now. Use present tense as if you already have it now.
  • Realistic & ResponsibleMake sure it doesn’t defy the Universal Laws that govern the physical world. Remember if it’s too good to be true, it probably is! Make sure it is good for you, good for your family, good for your friends and community, and good for the planet. Always think of win-win situations.
  • Timed & Toward what YOU want. Put a date (an ETA) on it and make sure it’s positively written so you go towards it…
