Screen time: Disconnected in a Connected World

Screen time: Disconnected in a Connected World

Feb 28, 2018

The rise of social media has forever changed the way we connect and interact with one another. Screen time has become the #1 channel of communication. Whether it’s on social media, texting, or in online games, teenagers spend more time connecting in cyberspace than they do in real life.

Recent surveys show that children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen.

That is 25% of each day, every day…

While screen time has become their world, it has at the same time become a battleground for many families…

How does Screen time impact teenagers?

Are they more connected or disconnected?

Generally speaking, teenagers are more connected than ever before. They are more connected to information, media, and their cyber-“friends”. Underneath this apparent social hyper-connection lies the other side: a significant disconnection from themselves.

Excessive connection with the outer world leads to disconnection from the inner world.

Adolescence is a difficult period of life. It’s a time of great change. Teens are going through physical, mental, emotional, and social changes. And they are also searching for their identity and their path forward in life.

  • Too much screen time can hinder soul-searching. With plenty of conflicting opinions, teens can easily get confused about their identity and path forward.
  • Too much screen time can have an impact on teens’ language development and social skills. Online messaging doesn’t convey the non-verbal cues necessary to establish genuine relationships. Lacking those vital cues during conversations can lead to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. And as a consequence stir up emotions and creates unnecessary drama.
  • Too much screen time can also result in children missing out on developing a wide range of interests. And the friends associated with those interests. This can lead to tunnel vision and in turn create anxiety and stress.

If your son or daughter is feeling lost or overwhelmed, it may be a sign they are disconnecting from themselves.

So, how can we help teens reconnect with themselves while engaging in screen time?

Uncovering the deeper reasons behind your teen’s screen time is a first step to help them reconnect with themselves.

Finding out:

  • Why are they doing it?
  • What is the interest?
  • Why is it so interesting?
  • What is the need?
  • What are they getting out of it?
  • What are they learning?

Will prompt them to reflect and go inward.

Getting them to connect with their body while engaged in screen time is another way to reconnect with themselves.

  • Taking regular breaks, breathing, and moving will ensure they remain connected with their body. This will ground them in the physical reality and make them aware of what’s going on inside – the feeling and sensations.

Transforming a compulsive activity into a “mindfulness” one can enable teens to reconnect with themselves.

Technology brings the possibility of connection and distraction. While screen time is a concern for teens, adults are not off the hook. They too can suffer from similar issues.

In Nutshell:

Connecting mind and body in daily activities is the secret to living life fully. The key to getting the most out of screen time is to remain connected with yourself while engaging with others. This will ensure you don’t lose yourself, your identity, and your path forward in life.
