Keeping COVID-19 in perspective

Keeping COVID-19 in perspective

Mar 23, 2020

Who would have thought that 2020 would be such a turning point in human history…

2020 will for sure be remembered as the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic that spread across the globe.

While there is a lot of coverage in the news about coronavirus COVID-19 (mostly doom and gloom), it’s important in these times of uncertainty to keep in mind the two sides of things.

Those who are familiar with the universal laws and the LAW of DUALITY (or POLARITY) appreciate that there are two sides to everything.

At the moment, the negative side of COVID-19 is what fuels in the news and draws attention.

However, let’s not forget that the other side, the positive one is also present at the same moment, although less covered because let’s be honest – bad news sells more than good news due to our implicit bias in loss aversion. We pay more attention to negative events than positive events. It’s a deeply embedded survival mechanism that has served us well.

However, people are starting to compile lists of good news and I’d like to share with you today a few positive news regarding the scientific progress that is happening towards tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is a link from Dr Peter Diamandis’s Tech Blog listing some of the latest development towards a treatment for COVID-19.

I’d like to add to this list what is happening here in our own backyard.

A team of researchers led by Dr. David Paterson at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and UQ Centre for Clinical Research (where I used to work…) are making progress on developing a drug therapy protocol using already approved drugs to treat coronavirus infection.

While it’s still early days, results are promising.

So while most of the surface news is scary, no doubt about it, things are happening in the background to do our best to tackle this challenge and come out of it as quickly as possible.

In times of uncertainty, it’s hard to make predictions. Even the best models are incomplete and inaccurate because of the sheer complexity, the lack of reliable information, and the speed at which events unfold and data change.

Making ‘predictions’ is important and useful to some extent, but let’s not get too carried away and transform them implicitly into ‘certainties’.

As Peter Diamandis mentioned at the end of his blog, “our most important tool during times of panic and crisis is our mindset“.

While cannot avoid what is currently happening in the worldwe can choose how we respond to it.

Taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually is our first duty – to ourselves and to those we love and care about – if we want to help one another get out of this storm.

Things come up, emotions bubble up, and fear and worry creep in. That is inevitable in times of uncertainty and unprecedented change.

The best way to handle these challenging times is not to avoid and repress what is surfacing but rather to speak about it and find a way to deal with it.

Sometimes, all it requires is having a conversation with someone that can give you a different perspective, help you balance that one-sided perception, and calm down in the midst of the storm.

Find someone to talk to, someone to connect with, and don’t keep things inside, just for yourself.

At the moment, we’re all on the same boat rocked by the sea, but the storm is only temporary and it shall pass.

If you need someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support one another.

Together, we can make this ordeal more empowering for everyone.

In a Nutshell:

There are two sides to everything in life and keeping a broad perspective is key to not find ourselves consumed by fear and paralysis.

At the moment, we’re all on the same boat rocked by the sea, but the storm is only temporary and it shall pass.

Don’t keep things inside, just for yourself. We’re here to support one another. Together, we can make this ordeal more empowering for everyone.
