Ichigo Ichie - Honouring Every Moment In Life
Three years ago, I came across a little book that would drastically influence my way of thinking about each moment of life.
Following the emergence of the worldwide Covid pandemic, the importance of the message contained within the pages of this book became really significant given what humanity was going through.
The book is ICHIGO ICHIE, The Art of Making The Most of Every Moment, the Japanese Way.
The main point of this book is about remembering that every moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever - an idea captured by the Japanese phrase "ICHIGO ICHIE".
In Japanese culture, ICHIGO ICHIE is often used to convey that an experience, an encounter, or a moment is unique and a special opportunity.
The importance of paying attention to and celebrating every moment of life has been reinforced with the pandemic and the realisation that life is fragile and our world can change drastically suddenly.
From that point forward, I have made a commitment to myself to celebrate every moment (no matter how big or small, positive or negative) by being more present, paying attention to what's happening, celebrating the important people in my life, and making sure that there is no one moment that passes that I haven't fully paid attention to, reflected upon and appreciated.
I encourage you to read this little book and reflect on the importance of ICHIGO ICHIE - One moment, one opportunity - in your life, and perhaps like me, make a little visual reminder for it.
After all, we are here on this magnificent planet, one of a kind pale Blue Dot in this vast universe, to live life fully, love, and make an original contribution to humanity that matters. And that starts by being aware of and paying attention to our most precious resource - the present moment - so it doesn't get wasted because we take it for granted...
In a Nutshell:
I invite you to be more mindful of the present moment because the past is history, the future is a mystery but the present moment is a gift for those who give it their full attention.
