Feeling Drained of Energy: What is really going on?

Whether it is at work or outside of work it doesn’t matter. The truth is, lacking energy sucks…


For those in high-stress positions, or high-performing teams feeling drained of energy is a killer. It means we won’t be able to keep up with our own expectations, and with the expectations of others. Simply said, we won’t be able to perform the way we’re meant to. Ouch!


So, in order to not get left behind and not expose our weakness, we look for ways to push ourselves. We go heavy on the coffee, or we buy some “energy drinks” at lunch, or we might even pop a pill, just to get a little boost to make it through the day. We reassure ourselves and tell our colleagues “I’m usually not like that. But today is tough. I have a lot of stuff going on…”


And that may be true. Today may be an exception. However…


Judging by the statistics and what’s going in the world, I tend to think that it may be more frequent rather than the exception. From my own experience having worked with people in high-stress positions and high-performing teams, I have observed that this more often the “norm” than the “exception”.


So, what is going on?


When we feel drained of energy, our immediate reaction is “I need more sleep. I’m not sleeping enough…, or I need to eat better food. I’m not getting enough nutrients and vitamins in my body. I need to take more supplements…”


These are the obvious reasons for lacking energy. And these are what we tend to address first – the “physical aspect” of energy.


But is that it?


I like to think that energy exists in different forms. We have chemical energy (that comes from the food we eat and the things we drink), and we also have spiritual energy (that comes from having a sense of living on purpose and being on a mission).

What people often ignore is what drains energy…


A lack of clarity on what you are doing, on your role, on your purpose often drains our mental energy and spiritual energy. Asking yourself “What am I doing here?” on a daily basis, feeling disengaged at work, or feeling disconnected from yourself are major energy killers.


Similarly, being pissed off at other people at work or outside of work, holding on to grudges from the past, or feeling stuck, limited, or trapped at work depletes our mental, emotional, and spiritual energy.


There may also be things that you are not aware of…


Things that are going on in the background in your subconscious mind are currently sapping your energy. An no matter how hard you work to replenish your energy stores through eating healthy nutritious food and making sure you get plenty of sleep, nothing seems to make a difference. You wake up every morning tired, frustrated, and it feels like groundhog day!


What else can you do?


How about taking a good look at your current situation and performing a little self-assessment.


If you don’t take the time to carefully assess the situation, you’ll continue to get the same results.

Let’s start with the obvious:


  • Are you eating enough quality food, or are indulging in junk food, skipping meals, or not taking the time to eat properly?
  • Are you sleeping enough? (Here I do not only mean the duration but also the quality of your sleep).


If you’ve ticked those boxes, congratulations! You got that sorted.


Next is to have a look at what is going on “in-between your ears”.


Here are a few questions to help you kick start the process:


  • How do you feel about your work? Are you enjoying the work you do, or are you feeling like “I can’t wait to get out of here and counting the hours?”
  • Are you feeling limited, stuck, or trapped at work?
  • How is your relationship with your colleagues? (Do you like them, hate them, or don’t care at all…?)
  • Do you have a vision for yourself and your life? (or you just go with the flow and don’t care about what is going to happen tomorrow)
  • Are you having a meaningful connection with your work, or have you lost your spark?
  • Are you feeling you are making a contribution?
  • Are you frustrated and/or pissed off with your situation because you don’t like where you are, but you don’t know what else to do?
  • Are you feeling out of control in your life?


I could go on with many more questions, but these should help you start your self-assessment.


Taking the time to make this self-assessment is similar to the scene in the movie The Matrix when Morpheus asks Neo if he wants the blue pill or the red pill.


  • Take the blue and you’ll forget about everything I have written here and you’ll go back to “normal life”, feeling tired, frustrated with yourself, and lacking energy, not knowing why… For sure, not thinking about what is going, denying, and continuing on as normal feel “better” because you think you’re in “control”, even the evidence may suggest otherwise.
  • Or take the red pill, do this quick self-assessment and gain a deeper awareness and be honest about what’s is really going on in your life. This may be confronting… However, only with a new awareness, you can make adjustments.

People often say “Ignorance is bliss”. Well in the case of drained energy, ignorance leads to the low road… And the low road means not only negatively impacting your professional environment, but it will also spread to your personal, intimate, and social life…


And the longer you wait, the harder it gets to get back up onto the high road.


Like Neo in the Matrix, you have a choice.

In Nutshell:


When you’re feeling drained of energy, look at the bigger picture beyond food and sleep. Find out what is going on in your head that may be the cause of your energy drain. A careful assessment will help you identify the cause, rather than simply quickly addressing the symptoms.
